French-German cooperation on a common eBanking standard for corporates – A further step towards European standardisation –

Common press release CFONB - ZKA

The French banking sector, represented by Comité Français d'Organisation et de Normalisation Bancaire (CFONB), together with the German banking industry associations represented in the Zentraler Kreditausschuss (ZKA), have today signed a cooperation agreement on the joint use of a new communication protocol for financial transactions on the internet, marking a further step towards enhancing the corporate-to-bank relationship. This communication protocol (Electronic Banking Internet Communication Standard, EBICS) - originally developed by the German credit industry - will become one of the main solutions proposed to the market. It will enable corporate clients to flexibly, securely and efficiently link with their banks and to select the most suitable services provider for their individual needs. EBICS has "multi-bank capability", meaning that all corporate clients, i.e. literally hundreds of thousands of companies, can reach French and German banks using the same solution. EBICS is already being used in Germany and within the next two to three years the new standard will help to replace ETEBAC in France and FTAM in Germany.

"EBICS will provide significant impetus for competition in European payments processing." French and German banking industry representatives welcome in particular the agreement on a common communication IP protocol as a further major step towards the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA). It is planned to extend EBICS use to other countries in order to promote the standardisation of payments. Therefore other European countries are invited to subscribe to the protocol as the next step.

This cooperation agreement intends to facilitate corporate clients' financial flow management, EBICS being neutral regarding the business type it supports, i.e. credit transfers, direct debits, bank statements, cash and securities management services or other financial services. Compared with the current protocols, EBICS offers state-of-the-art security standards, especially cost-effective improvement in the area of data and line encryption and authentication (distributed digital electronic signatures) and higher transmission speed.
